During this module, you’ll learn the importance of protecting your intellectual property through the use of patents, copyrights and trademarks, how you can benefit by licensing technology, and how to protect your business interests if you decide to license someone else’s technology. Specific objectives include: • Learn why intellectual property protection is important. • Learn how to know when you need a patent, trademark or copyright. • Understand the benefits and potential problems associated with licensing technology. • Learn how to protect your business interests if you license your technology. • Understand how to protect your business interests if you license someone else’s technology.
Speaker(s): Sanjay Dhole is a Technology Program Coordinator for Maricopa SBDC. He works with tech startups by helping them put together business plan, feasibility analysis, SBIR/STTR proposal preparation, investor readiness and other activities. Prior to joining SBDC, Sanjay founded and operated two Arizona based businesses in the area of IT Software and Finance. Sanjay holds Masters in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University and Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology. He worked for Microchip Technology and Intel Corp. as Product and Design Engineer prior to starting his entrepreneurial career. His representation also includes enforcement of licensing provisions related to intellectual property. Rod Fuller - Rod has extensive experience representing companies an all areas of intellectual property law, including patent and trademark prosecution and IP portfolio management; patent-ability, invalidity, non-infringement opinions, licensing, and joint development and confidentiality agreements; patent litigation; and appeals before the USPTO Board of Appeals. Rod handles IP issues attendant to mergers, acquisitions, partnerships, collaborations, and the development of market entry strategies.
